In 1949, Ted Phillips, an enterprising 17-year-old, partnered with his cousin Clyde Phillips on a $495 Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) land clearing job in Mississippi. Ted borrowed his dad’s car, loaded cross-cut saws and axes, and carted Clyde and two other men down the narrow two-lane roads more than 450 miles from the mountains of Robbinsville, North Carolina, to Philadelphia, Mississippi.

It was hot, exhausting manual labor. Yet, despite its small scope, the team took pride in a job well done and managed to net a good profit. They didn’t know it at the time, but this laid the groundwork for P&J.

The explosive prosperity and expansion of post-war America continued well into the 1950s and built a strong foundation for a heavy civil construction company. In 1952, Ted partnered with his high school friend Ted Jordan to form P&J. In 1953, they earned their first big break when the company was awarded the ROW clearing for sections of the West Virginia Turnpike.

The 1956 Federal Aid Highway Act called for the construction of more than 41,000 miles of highways, and this swift development throughout the Southeast required the TVA to rapidly clear thousands of acres of land. This expansion of civil infrastructure would prove to be an immense amount of land clearing and earthwork, and P&J was able to build on this work.

Ted instilled in the foundation of P&J a respect for long term relationships. We take care of our clients, and after more than 60 years in business, TVA continues to be one of P&J’s clients.
